With the development of the East River project just ten minutes from downtown Houston, Suderman Towing saw an opportunity to relocate their main office to a waterfront location—perfectly aligning with their deep-rooted history along the Port of Houston, Galveston Harbor, and the Texas Gulf Coast.
Their previous office was filled with artwork and memorabilia celebrating this legacy, including six large-scale replica tugboat models, each weighing hundreds of pounds. Showcasing these meaningful pieces became a central focus of the design.
Drawing inspiration from the building’s exterior, we introduced warm wood tones, dark metals, and exposed concrete columns to create a polished industrial aesthetic that reflects Suderman’s identity. Their signature blue was incorporated throughout the space, along with a subtle water motif, reinforcing their connection to the waterways. Expansive south-facing windows frame stunning views of Buffalo Bayou, allowing natural light to flood the office and highlight the carefully curated artwork.
Positioning the office strategically within the floor plate maximized these waterfront views, making the space a constant reminder of Suderman Towing’s history while looking toward the future.
One of the biggest challenges was coordinating the tenant build-out alongside the ongoing construction of the multi-tenant building. As one of the first projects in the space, we worked closely with the general contractor and building management to ensure seamless integration with shared areas—particularly at the suite’s entrance, which sits adjacent to a shared conference room. Ceiling design elements required special attention to maintain visual continuity and meet both Suderman’s and the building’s design intent.
The final result is a workplace that blends history and modernity, offering a refined yet authentic environment that celebrates Suderman Towing’s legacy while embracing its next chapter.
