Local Office, a coworking space in West University Houston, provides the community with a place to work, play, and build networks.

The project challenge was to create a space that was inspiring, productive, and connected to the community it serves, while maintaining profitability. A central requirement of the redesign was that the space be well-lit which required intensive exterior adjustments. Adding light into the space required large sections of tilt wall to be removed and skylights added in areas identified during the space planning phase of the design process. The project site is a commercial mixed-use building, a former industrial services warehouse, and required a complete overhaul.

Local artists stenciled the floors and added graphic interest throughout the space. The interior design recalls the 1920s history of the area when the neighborhood’s streets were named after well-known authors. A library was incorporated into the community breakroom and furnishings were selected to give the user a sense of stepping back into a 1920s bookstore.

Maximizing usable space was a consideration in the layout of the space which provides open seating, dedicated desks and private offices. The design solution blended moments of open space with a viable density of workstations. To achieve this, the community spaces were concentrated towards the front of the building and flow seamlessly into the open stairwell.
